E-learning is an interactive web based education program with streaming video, moving slideshows, audio with scrolling text, and interactive games. It incorporates both visual and audio stimulus for learning which helps students retain important information sooner. E-learning is proven to reduce training costs, improve compliance, increase employee competencies, and reduce employee turnover. Many companies know that it is something they need or want but fear of costs, lack of understanding, and the inexperience of pursuing an e-learning initiative can keep companies from moving forward.
Many companies in the hospitality industry hire new employees and begin training them using a "shotgun" method of training. We welcome them to their new job, tell them that they've made a great choice in coming to work for us, and then we bombard them with everything they need to know about their job, the people they work for, the people they work with, and what they can expect in a long-term career. Our industry is fast-paced, high-energy, and because of high employee turnover numbers, there is an inherent need to get people trained as quickly as possible. E-learning enables companies to save time by teaching the employees what they need to know when they need to know it.
The primary purpose of this course is help servers develop a sense of purpose, as well as learn the importance of their role in building a positive relationship between the customer and the restaurant. Once servers understand this fundamental aspect, it creates positive morale, promotes team work and provides more consistency of service. As well, servers realize that the success of the restaurant and their job security is dependent on their performance.
In addition, this course will provide essential education on wine. Servers will train their sense of smell, taste and touch and then apply that training through a tasting evaluation. This combination of sensual training and theoretical knowledge will set a foundation for life-long learning about wine.
This training program does not address basic mechanics of a service such as setting or clearing plates. It is was not created to be a one size fits all training program or to be a complete substitute for traditional training as the program is not expansive enough.
This program is a platform or philosophy to build a consistent training program around. Managers and owners can take this program and expand on it to reinforce the points that make their establishment unique.
I want all people to know that service is not only an honorable profession but can be a lucrative career choice! And even if you don't want to make it a career choice, if you learn the skills well, you will always have something to fall back on when your corporate job downsizes you!
